What is Guerilla Art All About?
This week our assignment required making a sort of street art!
I had never heard of this idea before but ultimately the goal was to leave anonymous pieces of artwork in public places for others to see. I decided on spreading smiles :)
I chose hot pink post-it notes as my art piece and wrote the words “Smile More” in many different ways. I then set off to spread good vibes to Toronto along my daily commute. I was inspired to leave post-it notes throughout my commute as I have noticed that not many people smile or look remotely happy while on the go train and subway, and I felt if I saw an anonymous note like this I would at least crack a small grin.
Some of my Post-it notes I made
Here are the many places I posted my notes...
on a post on campus
on someone's bicycle
a Ryerson University campus map
In the subway station
on the GO train ticket puncher

REACTIONS...
As I placed my post-it notes in places I was able to observe the reactions of others around me. Instantly people looked in my direction to see what I was sticking on such a random object but for the most part people actually smiled…although maybe they thought I was crazy.
I waited around the area where I posted the note for a while each time and as people walked by (not knowing I had put it there) my goal was a success! I saw people smile or at least lighten up. I was unable to snap a picture of an anonymous person reacting to my art posting mostly because it would have been too obvious and many of my spots were high traffic areas in commuting that it would not have been an effective picture. I did manage to have a friend react to my post-it without reading it before hand and this was her result…..a grin!
The process in which I created my street art was definitely an adventure. At first I felt weird just posting notes randomly and snapping pictures of it, however once those people walked on by I was able to see the reaction my note made. I was actually happy to be able to spread a smile to commuters and to create something out of the ordinary in such a familiar route.
When working with children in the future I think this activity would be a fun alternative to classroom learning. I would get all my students to either paint, draw a message or picture they felt was inspiring or positive and have them all post their artwork in public together. Having the impact of many artwork pieces in one spot would be an effective idea, and the children would be able to see the reactions of many people.
Art Word of The Week:Visual
I think that a visual is any information obtained by looking or seeing. Visuals in art can be used through pictures, written words or any image (on paper or in person). Visuals can also contain several colors and shades. This week my Guerilla Art was in the form of spreading visuals and written words around many Toronto commuter locations. I was able to put the use of visuals to work and engage strangers into not only viewing my art but also doing what it suggested....smile :)
